Firebenders seem to have some crazy patience… 

And yet, they can be incredibly impatient with emotional things.

This seems to fit with the nature of fire. Given fuel a fire will burn hot and bright, even flare up in an impressive display, but when the campfire burns down, those ashes will smoulder until morning and still be hot enough to burn.
